Discover and learn about Antoniads Gardens & Palace

A Legacy of Beauty

Antoniades Garden is one of Alexandria's most historic and picturesque parks. Its lush lawns and shaded groves spread out around the Palais d'Antoniadis, a 19th-century villa built in a miniature Versailles style.

The garden is famed for its classical atmosphere – life-sized marble statues of mythic gods and great explorers dot the paths – and its botanical variety. In fact, the Antoniades Gardens are the oldest gardens in Alexandria (with roots that some trace back to the Ptolemaic era), making it a living tapestry of the city's heritage. Towering palm trees, fountains and ornamental hedges blend with exotic plants to create a serene green oasis in the city, reflecting both local tradition and European design.

Historical Background

Antoniades Garden's story spans millennia. The site (once known as Eleusis) was already prized in ancient Alexandria and later revived under Muhammad Ali's dynasty. In the 19th century the land passed to Egypt's Khedive Ismail and was extensively expanded – reportedly to about 50 acres – with rare trees and gardens added in emulation of European parks. In 1860 the estate changed hands when Sir John Antoniadis, a wealthy Alexandrian Greek merchant, bought the grounds and built the elegant villa. Antoniadis commissioned a French architect to lay out the gardens in the grand style he admired, and the gardens were soon named after him. Upon Sir John's death in 1895, his son Antonis carried out his wish by donating the palace and grounds to the city in 1918, ensuring the estate became a public treasure.

Over the next decades the Antoniades estate hosted royalty and world leaders. It served as a guesthouse and meeting place: kings of Greece, Belgium, Italy and other nations were entertained here, and Princess Fawzia of Egypt (later Queen of Iran) spent her early married months in the palace. Major historic events took place in its halls and gardens, including the 1936 Anglo-Egyptian treaty signing and meetings.
